I found the health insurance industry by chance.  My first interaction was much like many of yours.  I no longer had coverage through my employer and found myself shopping for health insurance as a consumer.  Thrown into it abruptly, trying to navigate where to even start.  I searched through websites and received hundreds of calls each day before succumbing to the pressure.  I was confused, exhausted, and frustrated with the process.  I barely understood the basics of health insurance, from the terms like deductibles, copays and coinsurance to all of the additional coverage agents were pushing me to add.  Who knew there we so many options.  Finally, I shopped based on cost and chose the “cheapest” plan, only to find out this plan would wind up costing me much more over the next several months.
